April 2013 Handicap Berta Drive Run Edgewood, NM Saturday, April 6 Our 6-month handicap series that started in November came to a close on Saturday, April 6 with Kathy Kirsling’s Berta Handicap. What a finale it was! Kathy has been hosting the April handicap for the last several years and somehow manages to find a way to out-do the previous year’s event. Anyone that has done this handicap before knows to expect the unexpected whether that be windy conditions, huge hills, hilarious signs, or all of the above. This year proved to be no different with the toughest course yet and a host of oddities (bagged beer bottles, shoes, signs, etc.) along the way to entertain.
First time handicapper Jen Ogden had a great time on the hilly course, crossing the line first and winning the $10 handicap prize. And the fun didn’t stop there. Kathy had prizes for the fastest male (Dennis Muirhead) and female (Jean Herbert), the middle finisher (Stephen Malone), and the last finisher (Beth Davenport). Additionally, prizes were given out to those who could answer several different trivia questions related to details of the course they had just run. It was a lot of fun and Kathy did a great job coming up with unique questions and fun prizes. At the end of each 6-month series, we award a gift certificate for a free pair of shoes to the person who has accumulated the most points over the series. Jackie Calquire was the winner this series and she has a great story. Her first run back from a hamstring tear was the November handicap. She wasn’t sure she’d even be able to run that first event but she did and finished first. Since then, she has gotten stronger and has improved her times significantly. Only Stephen Malone was close to Jackie in the points standings and Stephen, too, has a great comeback story. He was recovering from knee surgery when he ran the November handicap and, like, Jackie, has only gotten stronger and faster over the last 6 months. At stop sign turn east (left); you are now on old Route 66 (aka Hwy 333) Go ~1.5 miles, then turn north (left) onto Mountain Valley Rd. Go ~1.8 miles. After the "dormitory-like" house, turn right onto Berta Drive and proceed to #17 on the left. |
