LA LUZ TRAILHEAD PARKING LOT RECONSTRUCTION
Beginning mid to late October following Balloon Fiesta, the La Luz trailhead and parking area along with Forest Service road 333A will be closed for reconstruction. Reconstruction work will include increasing the number of available parking spaces, improved traffic flow and improvement of associated trailhead facilities and signage.
“The la Luz Trailhead is very popular and we are eager to improve the trailhead for the public by increasing the number of parking spaces, improving traffic flow and trailhead facilities. I know this period of closure will inconvenience some members of the public and I ask that you have patience during the construction.” - Crystal Powell, Sandia District Ranger
Reconstruction and closure is anticipated to last through February or March 2019 depending on weather conditions. While closed, the public may continue to access the La Luz Trail (#137) via the Piedra Lisa-La Luz Link Trail (#137C (starting at the Piedra Lisa trailhead)) or a newly constructed link trail starting at the Juan Tabo Picnic Area (see map). Additionally, while the trailhead is closed, traffic will be routed one-way through the picnic area.
