Adopted Trail Coordinator:

Richard Harris

DIRECTIONS
To reach the meeting place, take Coors Blvd to just before (if headed south) or just after (if headed north) St. Pius X High School, turn west on Western Trails, then north on Atrisco Drive NW until it begins to turn to the east. (This is also the point at which it comes very close to Unser Blvd.) Park along the street close to the bend.

ALBUQUERQUE ROAD RUNNERS
ADOPTED TRAIL

Traversing it doesn’t provide as tough a workout as climbing the La Luz Trail, but ARR's “other” adopted trail offers easy access to petroglyphs, radio-controlled model airplanes, and (extinct) volcanoes. This stretch of bike/jogging trail starts across the street from the Unser-and-Western-Trail entrance to Petroglyphs National Monument and heads north for about a mile to Dellyne.

Our semiannual trail cleanups start at 8:30 am on the scheduled morning. We meet at the bend where Atrisco headed north becomes Legends headed east, which seems to be a convenient place for parking our cars (for those of us who don't walk or jog over) while we walk the trail, transferring accumulated litter to trash bags.

This gives you the choice of ending your early-morning workout at the meeting place and using litter collection as a cooldown activity, or starting your late-morning jog in the pleasant Petroglyphs area after having contributed your efforts on behalf of the environment and your Club. Water, gloves, hats, a few “grabbers,” and (naturally) trash bags provided.

In the meantime, the next time you're going to be running along Unser, feel free to bring a plastic bag(s) and collect a bit of the litter that has dared to sneak back onto the trail.  You can deposit your “finds” in the dumpster at The Garage (near the southern end of “our” section of trail), whose manager has given us his OK.  Please also let Dick Harris know how much time you spent on this contribution to the club and the running/biking communities.

Trail Cleanup - May 19 + 20, 2017

Magnificent Seven Clean ARR's Share of 50-Mile Loop

Since our last cleanup in November, much of the section of our adopted trail has been signposted as part of the 50-mile Activity Loop around Albuquerque - including the 34.5 mile mark on that almost-completed hike/bike path (see photo below). For more information about this initiative, click here.

For this first of two cleanups in 2017, we offered two opportunities to volunteer:  Friday morning May 19 and Saturday morning May 20. Turns out one session was enough to eliminate most of the litter on this Westside trail. On Friday, ARR members Dennis and Glenda Muirhead (president), Fred Bonnell, Cecilia Niemczyk, Joyce Fafard (treasurer), Laura Maclay, and Kelley Garcia (board member) braved unseasonable cold, high winds, and even a touch of rain to clear over three-quarters of the trail and adjacent areas. They saved a bit at both ends of the trail for polishing off the next morning by the only person to show up - Dick Harris. An even dozen large trash bags of litter were collected, plus some plastic auto trim and cut-up sections of a tree.

December 1st will bring another opportunity to participate in the trail cleanup, so keep an eye out for the announcements of the date(s?) of that cleanup. As everyone showed up on Friday, and only Dick Harris on Saturday, we may consider making this a Friday-only event next time.

Two-Day Battle Waged Against Adopted Trail Litter
One session wasn't enough to eliminate all the litter on ARR's adopted trail. First, on Friday, Nov 18,  the Fab Five (Dennis and Glenda Muirhead, Kelley Garcia, Cece Niemczyk, and Joyce Fafard braved the threat of the season's first freeze plus (the threat of) very high winds to clear three quarters of the trail and the adjacent tumbleweed-laden bushes and vacant lots of virtually all litter.  Then, on Saturday morning, in weather that was in fact freezing at the start, the Dauntless Duo of Linda Stiles and Fred Bonnell completed the cleanup. Dick Harris brought ARR's supply of bags, grabbers, and gloves to both sessions. Ten large trash bags of litter plus some scrap lumber were collected for City of Albuquerque pickup, leaving a trail we ARR “parents” can be proud of.  Thanks to our magnificent seven (plus one)!
