Member Race Series

A points competition for members of ABQ Road Runners Club

Race Series Coordinator:
 Ian Maddieson

Last updated 3.30.2022

The ARR Member Race Series is a designated set of races in Albuquerque or nearby, for members of ARR to engage with each other in friendly competition. The idea is to encourage participation in different kinds of races. There are six categories:  4 distances for road races plus short and long trail events.

Participants in the series score points according to their finish time compared with the median finisher — the runner whose time divides the field into two equal halves. The median finisher equals 100 points and if you are quicker, you’ll score more than 100, slower times score less. The sum of your best score in each of the categories counts in the year-end total.

Competition is divided by gender and into 10-year age-groups, with your age on July 1, 2022, deciding which age-group you fall into. Two strategies help to get a big overall score -- either be fast in a few events or take part in a lot of different categories of races.

YOU MUST REGISTER to participate!
Any ARR member interested in participating is eligible without any further entry fee, but participants must register their interest with Series Coordinator Ian Maddieson, and provide name, date of birth, and gender.  You can sign up for the series at any time, and any qualifying race you have already done will be scored retroactively.

2022 MEMBER RACE SERIES

After a pandemic-truncated series with few participants in 2021, we are looking at a full-year series in 2022, starting early in March with the King of the Hill in Los Lunas. A difference this year is that, apart from the Run for the Zoo (May 1) and the Duke City Marathon events (Oct 16), multiple events on the same day are not included among the options, e.g. only the 5k in the popular Cherry Garcia races on Aug 1, and only the 10k in the Chunky Monkey races on July 17. The idea is to encourage a little more head-to-head competition among runners in the series. Plus, this restriction makes the life of the series coordinator a little easier.

RESULTS - 2021 SERIES

The 2021 series ran from July through November. Eligible races are listed below.
This year, with many disruptions to normal life, the ARR race series ended up with very few participants. Just nine runners signed up, and two of those (including me) did not complete any of the races in the series.
Highest overall scorer was Dina Hammad, who raced in four of the six categories and racked up 564 points with excellent performances. The Nickerson family, Steve, Kelly and Todd, did well too, with scores in 3 categories for totals of 380, 449 and 476 respectively. These are all age/gender group winners, Dina for F 50-59, Steve in M60-69, Kelly in F30-39 and Todd for M30-39 . Chuck Fuller won the M 70-79 group with 223 points, and Dennis Muirhead the M80-89 group with the same score. Gene Kersh scored 287 points to finish behind Steve Nickerson in the M60-69 group.
Congratulations to all and looking ahead to much more participation in next year's series.
